Volunteers 14+

There are many ways to volunteer with the group,  From a parent or community memeber looking to facilitate an evening program to being one of the contact scouters for one of the sections, the help is always appreciated.

As a Scouter, your role is one of assisting, supporting, facilitating and motivating. It’s a chance to engage with youth by empowering them to lead their personal progression, discovering their capability and independence within a safe and inclusive environment.

There are several screening requirements before Scouts Canada will permit you to be active as a Scouter.

Official documentation is available from Scouts Canada: Volunteer Screening

Registration

Registration as a volunteer can be completed online at www.myscouts.ca. Please see the Scouts Canada Volunteer Registration Guide.
Below are some tips specific to our Group about completing the process.

Interview

The process includes an interview with the Group Commissioner and typically the Section Scouter to confirm suitability for volunteering, including commitment to the principles of Scouting and other topics. A Scouter from the Area Support Team may also participate in the process.

References

Please provide 5 references that can be contacted regarding your volunteer position. References are primarily done through email, so please provide email addresses for all. Scouts Canada policy allows for a maximum of one reference to be a relative.

Police Record Check

The Group Commissioner can provide you with a Police Service Information Request Letter for your volunteer role, this will cover the cost of the Police Record Check. E-mail gc@1stairdriescouts.com to request a PRC letter.  The letter must then be taken to the Airdrie Police Station.

Training

Please log in to your account on www.myscouts.ca and look for the David Heustis Learning Centre on the left hand menu.
In the Learning Centre look for the tab labeled “Volunteer Ready”. This section should list the Scouting Fundamentals courses needed to start your training.Tips about the Training System:

Please do the training from a PC, iPad will not save your progress and Apple products that do not support Flash will have problems.
Some sections of the training modules have quiz questions, please make sure you have all the correct answers before proceeding as you can still move ahead with incorrect answers, but you will not receive the credit.
There is a session time out on training modules, so if you need to stop please make sure you fully exit out of the module to save your training. If you stop mid-way without logging out, you may still progress through the deck but your progress will not be recorded.
Do not close any of the intermediate pop-up windows that open as the training launches until you are completed your session, otherwise your progress may not be saved correctly.

Code of Conduct

As part of the process of logging in to Myscouts, you should be prompted to accept the Scouts Canada Code of Conduct, please read through it, as it outlines expectation around appropriate behaviour towards the youth. There is also a printed copy available for you to refer to and sign if needed.

SCOUT PROMISE

On my honour
I promise that I will do my best
To respect my Country and my beliefs
To help other people at all times,
And to carry out the spirit of the Scout Law.

What Makes Scouting a Great Volunteer Experience?

Many people are looking for ways to develop skills that help them achieve personal and professional goals. Scouting has a long tradition of providing such opportunities. A fully trained Scouter completes thorough online and experiential learning in understanding youth, program planning, leadership and safety training. Scouting offers many opportunities to develop marketing, communication, financial management and fundraising skills. We need your help to allow more young people to experience the challenge and adventure of Scouting. At the same time, we will help you challenge yourself. Gain new skills, join a community and help youth experience countless firsts as they develop into confident and capable individuals.
